Walking Group round-up 2023

Walking Group Round-Up 2023

Over this year our walking group has gone from strength to strength! With funding and support from @Paths for All, we have been able to add lots of exciting events in addition to our weekly walks. And there’s more to come in 2024!

Regular Walks (Tuesdays 11am)

Our regular walks are well loved by our seniors group – and we are blessed in Glasgow to have so many green spaces to walk to and around – Kelvingrove Park, The Botanics and glass-houses, The Forth and Clyde Canal, New Stockingfield Bridge, Hamiltonhill Claypits Nature Reserve, The River Clyde have all become regular fixtures in 2023. We have loved how these walks change over the seasons (– especially our River Kelvin riverside walk! More on this in 2024!)

Dementia friendly walks

Following training from Paths for All, our walk leaders are now trained to deliver ‘dementia friendly’ walks. Come Spring-time 2024, when the weather improves a little (not as far away as it seems!) we hope to be offering a shorter, quieter, monthly dementia-friendly walk. Keep an eye on our news and social media for start dates!

Strength and Balance

Earlier this year Louisa undertook extra training in ‘Strength and Balance’ (S&B) exercises for the elderly.  There are around 10 exercises in the sequence which we all now practice weekly along with our gentle movement / chair yoga class. Feedback on the strength and balance exercises has been really positive – although some of the movements can be challenging (if you know, you know!) we all feel the benefits!

Starting in 2024, we will be offering a shorter 15-minute S&B class – keep an eye out for start dates! If anyone would like a copy of the exercises in advance, please get in touch!

Behind Closed Doors

Thanks to our Paths for All funding, we have visited (walked to!) a lot of fascinating Glasgow places in 2023 – some familiar and some completely new to us all. Not surprisingly, these walks have been very popular, especially in the Autumn and Winter months when the weather isn’t always so kind to us but we still want to get out and about with friends.

2023 Highlights have included:

  • SWG3 Arts Venue and new community garden, guided tour

  • Civic House guided tour, followed by a delicious lunch

  • The National Library of Scotland Archive, Kelvinhall

  • Glasgow Cathedral and Townhead Tour and Walk

  • The Hunterian Art Gallery Tour

  • Glasgow City Chambers tour

  • Exhibition & tour: Byres Community Hub at @UofGlasgow School of Health and Wellbeing’s Clarice Pears Building

To find out about our next (secret location!) tour, drop us an email to community@garnethillmc.co.uk to join the walking WhatsApp group.

2024 walks start back on Tuesday 16th January 2024, meeting at 11am at GMC
All welcome.
