Where we walk

We regularly walk by the River Kelvin, The Forth and Clyde Canal., Hamiltonhill Claypits and The Botanics. For walks further afield, we often take the bus to the start point. For a full listing of past walks click here.

What is a health walk?

Walking is often described by health professionals as the nearest thing to perfect exercise, benefiting physical, social and mental health.  And it costs nothing! A health walk is a short, safe, social, local walk led by trained walk leaders. At present we have 5 trained walk leaders (staff and volunteers) at GMC. Health walks are free to take part in and are under an hour.

Paths for All Funding

In April 2023, we were one of around 12 organisations in Scotland to receive a grant from ‘Paths for All’ to encourage more people to take up walking. Paths for All are an innovative Scottish charity who champion everyday walking in Scotland. Their remit is to significantly increase the number of people in Scotland who choose to walk, aiming to create a happier and healthier Scotland, improving quality of life and wellbeing for all. We are delighted to be part of this movement!

Behind Closed Doors’ Walks

Our weekly walks are interspersed with our ‘Behind Closed Doors’ walks. These walks, inspired by ‘Doors Open Day’ (link) are short walks to buildings and places of interest such as Merchants House, The Hunterian Art Gallery & the Lighthouse. Walkers get a short tour of the building (as well as a rest and a toilet break!) Making the most of our central location you get to explore undiscovered parts of the city and improve your fitness!

Walks are planned throughout the year. For a full list of  ‘Behind Closed Doors’ walks click here.
With support from Paths for All.

Other ways to get Involved

We are excited to let you know that as well as our weekly walks, we have some other creative walking projects in the pipeline Map my City and Memory Lane (link) that you can get involved in (and become healthier at the same time!)
